The new portal will deliver a range of innovative content and services to both existing Siemens customers, and to customers of the new range of Siemens Mobile handsets soon to be released in Australia.

Mercury Mobility, the entertainment division of Cellnet Group Limited, are the first mobile phone content provider in Australasia to work with Siemens in the development of entertainment products for their mobile handset range.

Ben Grootemaat, director of Mercury Mobility, said the company is developing cutting-edge mobile entertainment content specifically for the forthcoming range of Siemens Mobile handsets to be released in Australia.

He said the entertainment content, including the latest innovations in personalised ringtones, logos, interactive games and downloadable videos, will be accessed via the Siemens City section of the Australasian website portal, and is scheduled to be fully operational by August. It is also planned to extend the My-siemens content offerings to New Zealand customers later in 2003.

"The new Siemens Mobile handset range will feature ground-breaking mobile technology and Mercury Mobility will be working closely with Siemens to showcase these features," he said.

"Our strategy in developing the entertainment content for My-Siemens is to partner with operators to enable the most efficient and effective access and billing mechanisms for mobile entertainment provision."

Tarquin Swift, Product Marketing Manager of Siemens Mobile Phones, said that the fact Mercury Mobility had been the first company to demonstrate support of Siemens content in Australia was an important factor in securing the contract.

“Mercury Mobility is a young, dynamic and flexible company with many innovative ideas. This has enabled them to quickly become a key player in the Australian mobile entertainment content space. They have demonstrated their ability to lead in the latest trends, they were one of the first to offer polyphonic ringtones in Australia, and this fits exactly with the Siemens vision to be innovators in the mobile world.”

“The My-Siemens content offering will enable Siemens customers to download a range of premium content not yet available through other channels in Australasia. Our customers will soon be able to enjoy some of the most innovative content available, demonstrating the advanced capabilities of the Siemens current and future handsets.”

The Siemens content will be available through a dedicated “City” section of the global my-siemens website. Siemens works with only a select few content partners globally, typically with only one in each key region.

Cellnet Group Limited distributes mobile phone handset, accessories and IT products throughout Australia and New Zealand. Mercury Mobility was established in 2001 to target the emerging market for customised mobile phone entertainment content.

Leading mobile entertainment content provider Mercury Mobility has secured an exclusive image agreement with the Australian Picture Library.

The Australian Picture Library has the largest image content bank in the country, with more than 1.5 million images in its files and access to another 100 million. The library is an agent for 200 Australian photographers and some of the world’s greatest photographic libraries.

Under the exclusive agreement, Mercury Mobility will have access to the Australian Picture Library’s image bank to develop entertainment content such as wallpapers, backgrounds, animations and screensavers that consumers can download to their mobile phones.

Chris Boydell, director of Australian Picture Library, said the agreement with Mercury Mobility is an exciting opportunity for Australian Picture Library to step beyond its traditional business-to-business (B2B) transactions and to participate in the exciting and developing business-to-consumers (B2C) market for its intellectual property.

"We see the model developed with Mercury Mobility as a template for further exciting digital products based on our intellectual property," he said.

Ben Grootemaat, director of Mercury Mobility, said the agreement with the Australian Picture Library represents a further boost to Mercury Mobility’s leading position in the Australian mobile entertainment content space.

“Exclusive access to such an extensive and ever-evolving image bank provides Mercury Mobility with another real point of difference and competitive advantage in the marketplace,” he said.

“We are now looking forward to fully capitalising on the exciting opportunities presented by the Australian Picture Library to deliver the latest in innovative mobile entertainment content to consumers.”

The Australian Picture Library’s image bank covers a comprehensive range of subjects, including wildlife and nature, sport and leisure, modern lifestyle, destinations and science and technology images. The library also features the latest content from major movie premieres, fashion shows, sporting events, music concerts and award ceremonies such as the Oscars soon after they occur.

“Australian Picture Library’s photographers are dedicated to delivering the latest images from around the world as soon as they happen, which complements Mercury Mobility’s philosophy of developing and providing the latest in cutting-edge mobile phone entertainment content,” Mr Gootemaat said.

April 2003 Cellnet Group Limited, Mercury Mobility form strategic alliance.
Leading Australian mobile phone, accessory and IT distributor Cellnet Group Limited has announced a strategic alliance with mobile phone entertainment provider Mercury Mobility.

The alliance will establish Mercury Mobility as the entertainment arm of the Cellnet Group.

“Mobile phone accessories are a big part of our business and we are the market-leader in the field,” said Cellnet managing director Stephen Harrison.
“Moving into mobile entertainment content is a logical and exciting evolution of our business.”

Mr Harrison said the partnership with Mercury Mobility is part of Cellnet’s ongoing growth strategy of maximising the end value of its distributed handsets.
“Adding value to the products we distribute is the key to our distribution model moving forward and our relationship with Mercury Mobility will enable us to significantly enhance the attractiveness and value of our handsets,” he said.

“Our partnership with Mercury Mobility also highlights Cellnet’s continued commitment to delivering ‘first-to-market’ technologies and services.”
Under the strategic alliance, Cellnet will distribute Mercury Mobility’s innovative ‘The Generator’ card.

Ben Grootemaat, director of Mercury Mobility, said The Generator card is “all about making mobile phones more fun”.

The Generator card features the latest mobile phone entertainment content such as personalised ring tones, interactive games and downloadable videos.
The pre-paid card allows mobile phone users to customise their ring tones by accessing and downloading from a massive library covering everything from the latest hits and Top 40 songs to alternative, dance, rap, hip hop, heavy metal, children’s songs, movie soundtracks and much more.

Mercury Mobility has a dedicated unit constantly sourcing new content for The Generator card, which is regularly updated to keep pace with the latest trends, particularly among the dominant youth market.

Mr Harrison said The Generator card represents a good fit with Cellnet’s extensive range of mobile phone handsets and accessories.

“The strengthening of our relationship with Mercury Mobility further consolidates our position as Australia leading distributor of mobile phone handsets, accessories and now mobile entertainment services,” he said.

“As well as adding further value to the handsets we distribute, this alliance also allows us to further boost the appeal of mobile phones by making them more personalised, entertaining and fun for users.”

March 2003 Article in ‘the Australian - IT’ - Vodafone launches MMS content.
PARENTS beware: downloads to mobile phones - aimed squarely at "generation y" - are about to become big business.

The latest Tony Hawk Java skateboarding game, Eminem's new release, colour greeting cards and video clips will all be available within weeks. Vodafone is backing its live! MMS download service with a multimillion-dollar marketing campaign, starting next month.
Subscribers and owners of qualifying phones will be able to download new colour arcade games, pictures, polyphonic ringtones, horoscopes and news services.

Within two months of its European launch in October, the service attracted more than 380,000 subscribers, and Australians are expected to follow suit.

"Live! brings emotion to mobile messaging," says Vodafone marketing services manager Richard Sherwood.

"There's a definite wow factor. Thursday and Friday nights are the big traffic times, so we can deduce it's being used for social reasons."

Those who either don't own a late model phone or use Vodafone can purchase a more broadly based download service, in the form of prepaid Generator Cards, available from about 1400 phone shops.

In a move that will strike terror in any parent with school-age children, this retail base is being extended to other youth-oriented outlets, such as clothing, music stores and cinemas.

The Generator service is provided by Brisbane-based mobile content developer and aggregator Mercury Mobility.

Though Vodafone live! is available only for the latest model MMS Nokia, Sharp, Panasonic and Sony Ericsson handsets, Mercury Mobility claims to supply the largest range of handsets in the world with its Generator service.

"A variety of Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Siemens, Motorola, Samsung and Alcatel models are supported, with others becoming available all the time," says director sales and marketing, Ben Grootemaat.

A $9.95 Generator card with PIN number gives you seven downloads at about 8 points each, with 4 points left over to add to your next order.

The cards are not available for purchase on the web, because most of its target market don't use a credit card. "The youth market, 13 to 21 years old, likes the freedom of prepaid, even if it works out to be more expensive," Grootemaat says.

"They don't get any scary bills or have to worry about credit card applications. Our target market uses the internet a lot. We also provide access via SMS and WAP."

Grootemaat says that the retail model - with the introduction of MMS services, GPRS and 3G networks and new multifunction handsets, combined with interoperability between carriers - will begin to attract an older audience.

"Mercury will develop content for next-generation handsets before they become mass market devices," Grootemaat says.

"Keeping our retailers supplied is a massive job as we update our offering weekly. Kids want the Aria top 40 when it's hot so our music department has to be on top of it.

"We've 15 staff currently developing and sourcing a variety of new content, including Java games and downloadable video."
